Students analyzed the poem "To This Day" by Shane Koyczan and watched the YouTube clip. Both the lesson plans for the metaphor generator and this day's lesson (Sticks & Stones) may be found here. Students were assigned to create a 20-line. "To This Day" poem of their own. Due next time.
If students have not yet set up their profiles on Figment, they need to get on the ball. Students learned how to create and strengthen metaphors through a "Metaphor Generator." Students did an activity with groups and colored notecards to create extended metaphors. Due to a miscommunication, students were given more time to work on their 12-line poems; making sure to include two examples of each type of figurative language. Due next time.
Students received basic info on class. Assignments include getting the disclosure signed and writing a love poem without using the word love. Students should publish their work to Figment.com. Students need to "follow" Mr. Haslam on Figment so that he can see their work. Students should make sure their work is not set to private and that they click "Publish" if they want Mr. Haslam to be able to grade it.
