1. Students presented their love poems and turned in disclosures.
2. The class discussed six elements of figurative language and how to effectively use each inside the lines of a poem: metaphor, simile, personification, alliteration, hyperbole, and onomatopoeia. 3. Students wrote two lines of each type in class as we discussed. 4. Students were assigned a 12-line, non-rhyming poem, with two examples of each type of figurative language in the poem.

1. Students/teacher went over the disclosure. Students/parents must sign the contract portion and turn it in next time.
2. Students created accounts on Figment.com, followed the teacher, and were instructed to submit most assignments online this way. 3. For homework, students were to write a "Love Poem" without using the words, love, he, she, I, you, broken heart, or anything cliche. Students presented their Albums and worked on their portfolios.
Portfolios are due Oct. 28th and require ten typed quality poems.
Students were given a song lyric project.

This project is due October 14th Students learned how to write pantoums and created one of their own.
For great info on how to create a pantoum, go here. Students learned iambic pentameter and how to create poems using a specific rhyme scheme. A youtube video was shown in class to help with understanding. Students also looked at Sonnet #18 by William Shakespeare and discussed how to create Sonnets.
Students created their own sonnets for homework. Sonnets must have 14 lines, must follow iambic pentameter, and each line should be exactly ten syllables. The rhyme scheme should go as follows: ABAB CDCD EFEF GG Sonnets due next time. For more info on sonnets, please go here. Students learned about Haiku's and how to create one.
The poem has three lines and 17 syllables, following the format of: Line 1 - 5 syllables Line 2 - 7 syllables Line 3 - 5 syllables Students created three in class. They were then informed that they would make a collage using magazines in class. Students were to create a background with magazine images and then a haiku on top of the images also using magazine words. Students had two class periods to work on and finish this project. For more info on how to write haiku's, please go here. Students have both presented their own performance poems and listened to a SLAM Poet Ben Barker while in class. Students should bring glue sticks and other art supplies for next time.
